SoSE Delhi Admission 2026: Application Process and Eligibility

If your child is entering Class 9 or Class 11 in 2026 and has a clear leaning toward science, the arts, or even a career in the armed forces, the SoSE (Schools of Specialised Excellence) admission process is worth understanding now — before the registration window closes. These Delhi government schools offer something rare: a curriculum built around one specialisation, taught in partnership with the International Baccalaureate. Parents who miss the March deadline or submit incomplete documents often find themselves waiting another full year. This guide walks you through eligibility, the exact application steps, and the documents you will need, so nothing trips you up.

What Are Schools of Specialised Excellence (SoSE) in Delhi?

The Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Schools of Specialised Excellence (ASoSE) are choice-based government schools run by the Delhi Directorate of Education. They are affiliated with the Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE) and operate in partnership with the International Baccalaureate (IB). The idea is straightforward: give students with a genuine aptitude for a subject the chance to study it deeply, alongside a common foundational curriculum.

Students here learn through projects, field visits, and internships, with the option to pick up foreign languages. The schools currently offer five specialisations:

  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
  • Humanities
  • Performing and Visual Arts (PVA)
  • High-end 21st Century Skills (HE21)
  • Armed Forces Preparatory School (AFPS)

SoSE Delhi Admission 2026: Key Dates and Timeline

For the 2026–27 academic session, online registration for 12 specialised government and government-aided schools opened on 9 March 2026 and closed on 17 March 2026. Applications cover classes from Nursery to Class 10, and Class 12.

The full schedule runs as follows:

  • Online registration: 9 March to 17 March 2026
  • Document submission and verification at schools: 18 March to 23 March 2026
  • Draw of lots (if applications exceed seats): 24 March 2026
  • School allotment based on seat availability: 1 April 2026
  • Completion of the entire admission process: 2 April 2026
  • Admission from the waiting list (if seats remain): 3 April to 5 April 2026

Dates can shift. Treat edudel.nic.in as the only reliable source for updates.

SoSE Delhi Eligibility Criteria 2026

A student must be a resident of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi with valid address proof, and currently studying in a recognised school in Delhi. At least 50% of seats are reserved for students from government or government-aided schools. SC (15%), ST (7.5%), and OBC non-creamy layer (27%) reservations apply as per Delhi Government norms.

Eligibility varies by specialisation and the class you are applying for.

For Class 9 Admission

  • STEM, Humanities, and PVA: Age between 13 and 15 years as on 31 March 2026, currently studying in Class 8 in a recognised Delhi school.
  • High-end 21st Century Skills (HE21): Age between 13 and less than 15 years by 31 March 2026, currently in Class 8.
  • Armed Forces Preparatory School (AFPS): Minimum 13 years, maximum 15 years.

For Class 11 Admission

  • STEM and Humanities: Age between 15 and 17 years, having passed Class 10 from a recognised school in Delhi.

Note: Students currently enrolled in Class 9 or Class 11 are not eligible for admission to the same class in a SoSE.

SoSE Delhi Admission Process 2026: Step-by-Step

The application is entirely online. Here is how it works in practice — including the small snags that trip people up.

  1. Visit the official portal: Go to edudel.nic.in and find the SoSE admission section. The link is usually prominent on the homepage during the registration window, but it moves once the window closes, so bookmark it when you find it.
  2. Register and create a login: You will enter the student’s name, date of birth, and a mobile number to generate a login ID and password. Common pitfall: the OTP sometimes doesn’t arrive if the mobile number is linked to DND (Do Not Disturb) services. If you don’t receive it within a few minutes, try a different number — preferably one that has been active for a while.
  3. Fill in the application form: Log in and complete the form with personal details, academic information, and your choice of specialisation and preferred schools. Watch out: the portal may time out if you leave a page idle for too long. Keep your documents and details handy before you start so you can move through the form in one sitting.
  4. Upload required documents: Scan and upload documents in the specified format and size. Blurry or oversized files are a common reason for rejection at this stage.
  5. Review and submit: Check every field before submitting. Once done, take a printout of the confirmation page. Do not skip this — you will need the registration number for later stages.
  6. Document verification: After online registration closes, visit the allotted school (or as directed) between 18 and 23 March 2026 to submit and verify original documents. Another pitfall: some parents arrive without self-attested photocopies, assuming the school will make them. Bring your own.
  7. Check allotment and result: If applications exceed seats, selection is by draw of lots (lottery) . School allotment is announced on the scheduled date on the official portal. Log in with your credentials to check.

Documents Required for SoSE Delhi Admission

Carry both originals and self-attested photocopies for verification. The exact list may be specified on the portal, but the following are commonly required:

  • Proof of residence in Delhi: Aadhaar card, voter ID, ration card, or electricity bill.
  • Proof of age: Birth certificate or Class 10 certificate (as applicable).
  • Previous school records: Report card of the last class passed or a transfer certificate from the current school.
  • Passport-size photographs: Recent photographs of the student.
  • Caste or disability certificate: If applying under a reserved category.
  • Aadhaar card of the student or parent: For identity verification.

Keep multiple photocopies ready. It saves a trip back home.

Selection Process for Different SoSE Domains

Each specialisation selects students differently.

  • STEM: A written test covering mental ability, mathematics, and science. No negative marking. The syllabus is from the previous class (Class 8 for Class 9 admission, Class 10 for Class 11).
  • Humanities: A written test followed by a group discussion for those who qualify.
  • Performing and Visual Arts (PVA): A written test followed by auditions for shortlisted candidates.
  • High-end 21st Century Skills (HE21): A written examination and a project work/interview round.
  • Armed Forces Preparatory School (AFPS): A written examination, then physicals, personal interviews, and a medical screening. Candidates need at least 25% in each section and 40% aggregate in the written exam to move to the next round.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying without checking eligibility: Age and current class must match the requirements for your chosen specialisation.
  • Uploading unclear documents: Scanned copies must be legible and in the correct format.
  • Missing the document verification window: The dates are fixed. Plan accordingly.
  • Not taking a printout: Keep a printed copy of your submitted form and fee receipt (if applicable).
  • Ignoring the official portal: Check edudel.nic.in regularly. Social media rumours waste time.

FAQs

Q1: What is the full form of SoSE?

A: SoSE stands for Schools of Specialised Excellence, a network of government schools in Delhi offering specialised education in fields like STEM, Humanities, and Performing Arts.

Q2: Can I apply for more than one specialisation in SoSE?

A: The application form typically allows you to choose a preferred specialisation and schools. Check the specific instructions on the portal for the year you are applying.

Q3: Is there any application fee for SoSE admission?

A: The application process is generally free for government schools. For the most accurate and current information, check the edudel.nic.in website for any updates on fees.

Q4: What if my name is not in the first list?

A: If seats remain vacant after the first allotment, a waiting list is used. You may be considered for admission from 3 to 5 April 2026, based on your position on that list.

Q5: Are students from private schools eligible for SoSE?

A: Yes, students in any recognised private or government school in Delhi are eligible, provided they meet the other eligibility criteria.

Q6: How will I know if I have been selected?

A: The final list of selected candidates is published on the official edudel.nic.in portal. You can also check your school allotment status by logging into your account.

The registration window is short — barely a week — and document verification follows almost immediately. If you are applying this year, set a reminder for the portal opening and keep your documents scanned and ready beforehand. And if a technical glitch blocks your application, don’t wait: call the school helpline or check the portal’s notice board the same day, because the verification dates won’t move for anyone.
