Branded medicines can eat into a household budget fast, especially for chronic conditions that need regular refills. That is the gap the PM Jan Aushadhi Kendra is designed to fill — a government-backed retail outlet that sells quality generic medicines at a fraction of the price of their branded equivalents. If you have a pharmacy qualification, or can hire a registered pharmacist, opening one of these Kendras is a workable business option with structured government support. This article covers who can apply, the exact application route, what financial incentives exist in 2026, and the documents that trip up most first-time applicants. Rules and figures change periodically, so verify the latest position on the official PMBJP portal before you act on anything here.

What Is the PM Jan Aushadhi Kendra Scheme?

The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) runs under the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. Its purpose is narrow and practical: make quality-assured generic medicines available at dedicated outlets called Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs). Generic medicines carry the same active ingredient as branded versions but skip the brand premium — which is why they typically cost 50–80% less.

The network has expanded aggressively. Over 20,000 JAKs were operational by mid-2026, stocking 2,110 medicines and 315 surgical items. The government target is 25,000 outlets by March 2027, with a clear push into districts that currently have none. The operating model is franchise-like: individuals, NGOs, trusts, firms, and private companies can all apply, provided they meet the qualification and infrastructure conditions.

Who Can Open a PM Jan Aushadhi Kendra?

The single most important eligibility condition is pharmaceutical qualification — and it is where most applications fail.

Individual applicants must either hold a D. Pharma or B. Pharma degree themselves, or employ a qualified pharmacist who does. That pharmacist must be registered with the relevant State Pharmacy Council, and the registration certificate has to be produced during application or at final approval. Doctors and registered medical practitioners are generally not allowed to apply as individual owner-operators under the standard guidelines.

Organisations — NGOs, societies, trusts, firms, private companies — can apply if they employ a qualified pharmacist with a D. Pharma or B. Pharma degree. For NGOs, a Darpan ID is typically required.

Beyond qualification, you need a retail space of at least 120 square feet. The location should not fall within 1 km of an existing JAK, though this distance norm has been revised more than once, so confirm the current rule for your pin code on the portal.

Subsidy and Incentives: What Financial Support Is Available?

The scheme offers two layers of support: ongoing margins and a one-time grant for specific categories.

Ongoing incentives. Kendra owners earn a retail margin built into the MRP of each medicine. This was historically 20%, and recent policy discussions have aimed to raise the trade margin to 30% to improve store viability. Separately, owners receive a monthly purchase incentive calculated as a percentage of purchases made from PMBI, subject to a ceiling — commonly cited as up to ₹20,000 per month — provided they stock the mandated 200 high-demand medicines. Because these percentages and ceilings are revised from time to time, treat them as indicative and check the current PMBJP circular.

One-time special incentive of ₹2 lakh is available for newly opened Kendras run by women entrepreneurs, Divyangjan, SC/ST applicants, ex-servicemen, and those setting up in Himalayan territories, island territories, North-Eastern states, and aspirational districts. The grant is split as ₹1.5 lakh for furniture and fixtures and ₹0.5 lakh for computer and equipment, reimbursed against original bills.

For women entrepreneurs specifically, the one-time incentive applies to applications received on or before 30 September 2026, subject to other conditions. After that date, the incentive is admissible only if the woman applicant is herself a registered pharmacist and operates the Kendra in her own name.

How to Open a PM Jan Aushadhi Kendra: Step-by-Step

The entire application runs through the official PMBJP portal. Here is the sequence, along with the points where applicants commonly get stuck.

  1. Go to janaushadhi.gov.in and find the “Apply for Kendra” section. This portal is the only authorised channel. Agents or intermediaries claiming to process applications outside it should be treated with suspicion.
  2. Register with a unique mobile number and email ID. You will receive a user ID and password on the registered email. Use an email you check regularly — all portal communication, including rejection reasons, lands there.
  3. Log in and fill the application form. The form covers applicant details, the proposed Kendra location, your pharmacist’s qualification and State Pharmacy Council registration number, and your bank account details. A common pitfall here: entering the pharmacist’s registration number incorrectly or using an expired registration. Cross-check the number against the certificate before typing it in.
  4. Pay the application processing fee. The fee is ₹5,000 for the general category, deposited only into PMBI’s designated virtual account via NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, or UPI. Keep the transaction reference number safe — you will need it in the form. If the payment does not reflect immediately, do not re-submit the form; wait for the bank confirmation and then proceed.
  5. Upload supporting documents. Self-attested copies of Aadhaar, PAN, pharmacist registration certificate, and other relevant documents. Each file must be under 200 KB and in PDF, JPEG, PNG, or JPG format. Oversized or wrongly formatted files are the most common reason for initial-stage rejection — compress them beforehand rather than trying to fix it after submission.
  6. Submit and track. After review, submit the application. A confirmation goes to your registered email. You can check status anytime by logging into the portal or calling the helpline at 1800-180-8080.

Once approved, PMBI guides you through obtaining the drug licence and setting up the store infrastructure.

Documents Required for Application

Self-attested copies of the following are typically required:

  • Aadhaar Card
  • PAN Card
  • Pharmacist registration certificate from the State Pharmacy Council
  • Proof of qualification (D. Pharma / B. Pharma certificate)
  • Bank statement for the last six months
  • SC/ST or Divyang (PWD) certificate, if applicable
  • Proof of proposed shop space (lease agreement or ownership document)
  • Darpan ID for NGOs

Organisations will additionally need a certificate of incorporation, ITR for the last two years, and details of the employed pharmacist. The exact list varies by applicant category — check the current guidelines on the PMBJP portal before submitting.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The most frequent rejection reason is a missing or unverifiable pharmacist qualification — either the applicant does not have a D. Pharma or B. Pharma degree, or the employed pharmacist’s registration cannot be confirmed with the State Pharmacy Council. Sort this out before you begin the application.

The second most common issue is document formatting. Files above 200 KB or in unsupported formats cause the upload to fail silently in some cases, and applicants only discover the problem when the application is returned.

A third mistake is overlooking the minimum distance requirement. Proposing a location within 1 km of an existing Jan Aushadhi Kendra leads to rejection. Check the local JAK presence on the portal before finalising your site.

Finally, not preserving the fee transaction reference creates avoidable back-and-forth with the processing team. Save the UTR number in a note or screenshot.

FAQs

Can I open a Jan Aushadhi Kendra without a pharmacy degree?

No. If you do not hold a D. Pharma or B. Pharma degree yourself, you must employ a qualified pharmacist who does, and provide proof of their State Pharmacy Council registration.

Is there any application fee?

Yes. The application processing fee is ₹5,000 for the general category, payable only through the designated PMBI virtual account. Do not pay cash or transfer to any personal account.

What is the monthly incentive for Kendra owners?

Owners receive a purchase-linked incentive on monthly purchases from PMBI, generally around 20% subject to a ceiling, plus the retail margin built into the MRP. Check the latest PMBJP guidelines for the current percentage and ceiling.

Do women entrepreneurs get a special subsidy?

Yes. A one-time special incentive of ₹2 lakh is available for women entrepreneurs, subject to application deadlines and conditions. After 30 September 2026, this incentive for women applicants is linked to the applicant herself being a registered pharmacist.

How can I check my application status?

Log into the Jan Aushadhi portal with your user ID and password, or call the helpline at 1800-180-8080.

Are the medicines sold at Jan Aushadhi Kendras of good quality?

Medicines supplied under PMBJP are procured only from WHO-GMP certified manufacturers and tested at NABL-accredited laboratories before distribution.

The application itself is not complicated, but it rewards preparation: get your pharmacist’s registration verified, compress your documents, and confirm the distance norm for your chosen location before you start the form. If your application is rejected, the portal usually states the reason — fix that specific issue and reapply rather than starting a fresh application, since your registration and payment reference remain valid.
